Discussion:
Extending Disk Size - how?

I'm in a dilemma as I can't figure out how to extend my HD. I installed a
Win2K server in order to start work on updating my certification to Win2k,
but I only chose to install the OS in a small 2GB partition thinking that it
would be enough. I installed Win2K server as a guest under VMware 4 running
on an XP host with a 4GB HD but chose to partition it into 2x2GB
partitions - I'm not sure I know what my logic was back then!!! Now that
I've decided to install Exchange server as well, I seem to be caught between
rocks.

I did some research and discovered that ServerMagic is to a server, what
PartitionMagic is to a workstation. However, I cannot locate ServerMagic
anywhere! My question then is "Is there another way of combining these
partitions into a big one or is my best bet to do a complete re-install?"

First, create a new virtual disk of the size you want. Second use a product
like Ghost to backup your current drive and restore it the newly added
virtual disk.

Change the drive mappings in the virtual machine so the new disk is the
first disk. You then should be able to boot from the new disk.

This is written up in a VMware knowledge base article.

Thanks for the responses. Since it appears this is a unanimous decision,
I'll do it as suggested.

Thanks.

Use the host disk cleanup tool, look for un-needed temp files.
You could also use a floppy disk based version of Ghost. It does not
need disk space on the drive it is imaging. Actually, I don't think you
need to use ghost at all, you should be able to use any disk cloning tool
to do what you need. Some even come on Knoppix CDs. Look for the KB
article to walk you through the cloning process.

As far as I've read "ServerMagic" isn't available anymore. Therefore there
seems to be "Powerquest VolumeManager", but I haven't got any experience
with it.

Information about it can be found on:

http://www.powerquest.com/

resp. on:

http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/products/products.cfm?ProductID=345&EID=0

It seems that Powerquest belongs to Symantec now.

HTH,
Steffen
