Discussion:
Can't write Visio 2000 to shared folder

I'm running SuSE Linux v9.2 Pro on an ReiserFS disk, VMWare v4.5.2
supporting Windows 2000 as the guest. This combination is running well but
I've got a problem whereby I can't read nor write Visio files to the shared
folder, but I can read and write .vsd files either to the local disk
_within_ the guest Win2000 OS, or to a network server from _within_ the
guest OS such as to a WinNT server.

I should mention that from within the Win2000 guest OS, I can run all of
Office 2000 apps either from the guest OS' drive or to the shared folders,
no problem.

It just seems to be Visio being the pain in the butt. Any thoughts, has
anyone seen this problem before??

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, hi

Regrettably, I have seen the same behaviour in a number of apps
other than office. You have to copy the file of interest to the
guest C:\ drive for it to work.

My assessment is that "shared drives" are not truly mounted in
vmware as virtual local drives, but are masqueraded networked
drives, and the MS apps will not process networked files. I've seen
this not only with Visio, but some mapping programs and other
graphics programs, ULead, etc. They only deal with files that are on
the same device and partition as the executable.

OTOH it may be a permissions thing.

Haven't really had the time to check it out, I've been concentrating
on migrating away from Windows altogether. And succeeding rather
handsomely, what with Fedora Core 3, GnuCash, Gimp, Kuickshow,
KWallet, fsync, ren, Firefox, Thunderbird, KDevelop, a raft of
mapping, astronomy software, ogle, mplayer, xmms, Crossover Office,
Wine, a host of scripts on BASH, and the increasing number of other
native linux apps.

As a result I visit vmware and windows about only about once a week
for some niche app like Visio. Sort of like going to see an old and
ailing friend in a hospice. You can't leave it altogether, but it is
no longer a big part of your life. There's just nothing there you need.

{Shrug}

Still and again, I did buy the latest version of Visio for its
capabilities - there is no equivalent yet in native Linux apps, and
the latest Visio won't work in CXO - so loaded it into VMWare 4.5.2,
with the same results, so share your pain.

Best regards, Andy
