You can set the order and if VM's start up automatically through the MUI
Options - Virtual Machine startup and shutdown.

Is that what you are looking for?

I am looking for a chance to get the vm immediately started and booted
after reboot of the guest system (linux).
The command-line option -x does not do this.

If its ESX, use the MUI
if its GSX you can put a line in your .cfg file : autostart = "TRUE"
if its anything else I have no idea

How about:
(Assuming a Windows Host)

Create a Windows Service (Automatic start) that runs a batch file that
launches VMWare Workstation - which defaults to a VM that has power on at
startup enabled in the VM settings.

I have no idea if this would work though ...

I read an article on running individual VM machines as a service. Google
should have it cached. You didn't even need to log on to the PC once you
had them setup.
