Sound problems

Hy everybody,

I'm new in this newsgroup, as I'm new for VMware (really, I tried version 3
some years ago, but my PC was too small at that time and I got poor
performances back).
Now I have installed Workstation version 4.5.2 I'm very happy about that
cause I can try software for my customers very easily.
I have the following problem:
if take as reference the "windows logon sound" when played in the host
machine (win2000) it takes roughly 13 seconds to end,
when it is played in the guest mode under a second W2K OS (virtual machine)
it sounds sliced and interrupted and takes almost 32 seconds to finish.
The strange things are:
if I keep moving the mouse to have a small CPU load (4-6 percent) the sound
is OK.
I have no yellow question marks in the hardware list.
All the sounds from virtual machines are played this way with a lot of noise
and distorsions.
The PC is Athlon XP3000+ with 1 GB ram and sound card is SB Audigy.

Has someone experienced the same problem?
Should I have to install the drivers on the Audigy CD on each virtual
machine?
Any other idea?
Thanks for your help.

No. The sound hardware is emulated. Have you installed the VmWare-Tools in
the guest OS?

This one's been discussed pretty heavily in the VMware workstation forums.
Basically, it's an unconfirmed bug (none of us on that board, which is
frequented by VMware employees, can figure out why VMware just won't come
out and confirm it) that affects primarliy Windows guests. As you note, if
you create a load by moving windows during play the sound seems OK. Someone
mentioned a bizarre workaround that adding a serial device to the VM (com1,
etc.) cures it as well, but I haven't tried it.

The bottom line is that sound has been one of the more flaky issues in
VMware over the years, in some cases involving undocumented .vmx entries to
work properly. So, I've chalked sound up there with 3d graphics as
something VMware simply won't do. Fortunately for my needs that's OK...

Thanks to you Mark and Mike,
I discovered two things
1) only the wav files are affected by this "chopped sound". Other kinds of
files and the audio of the video are perfectly played.
2) most of all, I just added a COM1 and .... it works !!!

Thanks again.
