No sound in host Win2000 after installing vmware 4

Hello,

Host win2000 SP4
SB live 1024 sound card

I have istalled vmware 4.
everything seems correct but the (host) sound card gives no sounds at
all, even when vmware is down.
Thus sound has disappeared from the computer.
everything indicates that the sound card is ok , the driver is ok,
nothing seems to be wrong whereever I look. When I start playing file it
is being played by the player alright But no sound from the speakers. I
tried everything:

I reinstalled the driver (successfully)
I removed and reinstalled the device
i removed the card from the box and put it in another slot
No way.

it looks as if wmware broke sth in the host for everything and
everywhere looks fine but still there is no sound

Any ideas? Thank you in advance

Have you checked form the obvious (which often gets overlooked) - the sound
being turned to zero volume or muted?

While possible (I suppose) I doubt that VMWare "broke" your sound card. Are
you using external speakers with the SB card? If so, are they plugged in,
power on? Did you hit a mute button?

Double check the WIndows Volume control. Make sure all sliders are not
bottomed out.
